"Black Hat Tradition"
The traditional matte black helmet worn by the Panthers signifies neither wins nor losses, but a symbol of life; for each wearer, who was either "too small or too slow", was given an opportunity to attend college and earn an education, continue their athletic career, and as a result mature into a young man you, your family and Ferrum College can be proud of.
When you leave Ferrum, we want you to be proud that you were a member of a select team. The "BLACK HAT" will always be a symbol of pride to what the "family" can do together and that each member, before and after, will have the same love and respect for the "Black Hat" as you do.
- Cleive Adams, Ferrum College Head Football Coach
Tailgating
Ferrum College has instituted a tailgating policy to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans attending Ferrum College athletic events. This policy intends to promote a supportive, festive and safe atmosphere while upholding the community values and safety..
College-sanctioned tailgating is only permitted in designated areas of campus. Alcohol is not permitted outside of the tailgating area. When guests leave the designated tailgate area, they must leave alcoholic beverages in the designated tailgate area.
Tailgating is only permitted on game days. Football Tailgating: parking lots will be open for tailgating five hours prior to kick-off on football game days. All other sports: parking lots will open for tailgating three hours prior to game time. Post-game activities must end no later than three (3) hours after the conclusion of the game.
Emergency access lanes must be maintained at all times. Do not block these areas.
Parking is first come, first served. Spots must be filled as vehicles arrive. No spots may be saved for vehicles not present or later arrivals.
Parking for the purposes of tailgating is prohibited in any area outside of the Adams Stadium lot or the Bassett Field lot, unless another lot is opened by College personnel for overflow.
The Parking and Tailgating Policy will be enforced by Ferrum Campus Police. Any vehicles parked prior to the opening of tailgate/parking areas will be towed at the owner's expense.
The safety and security of personal property is the sole responsibility of its owner; do not leave any personal property unattended. Ferrum College is not responsible, nor will be held liable, for accidents, damages, loss or theft of materials, items, or personal property.
Football Tailgating & Parking
Home tailgating locations for football will be on Bassett Field, while qualifying Panther Club Members will have access to the parking lot behind Adams Stadium. Please note, for home football games, the paved upper area of the Adams Stadium lot is for handicap parking. All other parking will be on the grass.
Overflow parking will be used in other college lots, starting with the Ferrum Fitness Center, Burrows-Skeens Tennis Courts, and Swartz Gymnasium lots. Please do not park in these additional lots unless you see signs indicating they are now open.
RV Parking is not encouraged. Anyone who travels with an RV or has a trailer attached to the vehicle, will be directed to the Blue Ridge Institute lot on Route 40, unless you have obtained prior approval from the College.
Visiting football fans are permitted to tailgate in the designated area above the Hank Norton Fieldhouse. This location can be accessed by using the VA Route 602 entrance (Ferrum Mountain Rd.). Take a right at Arthur Circle, then take an immediate left up the hill toward the apartment complex. The visiting football fan parking lot and designated tailgating area will be marked with appropriate signs.
JV Football and All Other Sports Tailgating
Tailgating will be permitted for all other sports, including JV football, in the lot behind Adams Stadium, unless there is a home varsity football game that day. On football game days, the Adams Stadium lot will be reserved for football handicap parking, as well as qualified Panther Club members until the conclusion of the football game.
While tailgating is a fun part of the college athletics experience, we remind fans that our teams need you in the stands to cheer them on.
