African American Heritage in Franklin County, Virginia

Since 1985, Darlene Swain, historian and Franklin County business owner, has been collecting stories, photographs and genealogies of African American families who have contributed, and are still contributing, to the diverse culture that makes our county such a unique place to live.

Her plan is to create a museum to house the material she has collected, now available for viewing by appointment or at the annual Warren Street Festival.  Thanks to a tourism grant and help from the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, this site is being created to make much of her hard work available to those of you interested in how African Americans helped make Franklin County what it is today.
